Principle

The neutral point gap earthing protection device connects a gap in series between the transformer neutral point and ground. When a single-phase-to-ground fault or transient overvoltage occurs, the neutral potential rises. Once it exceeds the breakdown voltage of the gap, the gap conducts immediately, discharging the fault current to ground. At the same time, the device issues a signal to trigger protective relays or circuit breakers, thus preventing prolonged overvoltage stress on the transformer and other power system equipment.

The main function of this device is to limit neutral point overvoltage, preventing insulation failure and equipment damage, while also providing fast detection and alarm of ground faults to enhance the safety and reliability of power system operation. By activating the gap, the device ensures transformer insulation integrity, mitigates equipment aging caused by overvoltage, and extends the service life of air-cooled or oil-immersed transformers.
